The comforting, slice-of-life series begins with metropolitan dentist Hye-jin (Shin Min-a) who lives in a high-rise modern apartment overlooking Seoul. However, her circumstances quickly change when she suddenly quits her position at a dental clinic after a messy fallout. To clear her head, she impulsively revisits the charming, quaint coastal town of Gongjin to find solace and reconnect with her roots on the very shore she and her late mother once enjoyed. 

Clad in designer bejeweled heels, she steps onto the sand and takes a moment to reflect on memories with her family. To her dismay, the rising tide washes away her luxury shoes while she is reminiscing! Realizing this, she flags down a nearby townsperson who is none other than Hong Du-sik or “Chief Hong” (Kim Seon-ho)—a gruff surfer who reluctantly finds one of the heels on the shoreline, telling her she’s going to have to fetch the other one herself. Instead, he tosses her a pair of rubber slides borrowed from a local raw fish restaurant. To compound her misfortune, Hye-jin soon discovers her phone has died, her car refuses to start, and a sudden tech blackout has plunged the entire town into offline isolation. 

Thoroughly perturbed by the inconvenience and interaction with thebrash Chief Hong, Hye-jin wanders around the town for assistance and becomes acquainted with the quirky but welcoming residents. After spending some time navigating the town, she realizes it has a significant elderly population that is in dire need of an accessible dental clinic. Encouraged by the locals, she makes a life-changing choice to abandon the big city and open her own practice, setting off a heartwarming story of fresh starts, community, and an unexpected spark with Chief Hong, a jack-of-all-trades with a license in nearly every occupation. 

Why Gongjin Stole Our Hearts (The Pros)  ✨

The series evokes a sense of nostalgia for a life not yet lived. Between its warm, buzzing community and calming seas, the show is like comfort food that can be enjoyed again and again. At the true heart of the narrative are Hye-jin and Chief Hong. Lovingly dubbed the ‘Dimple Couple’ by fans for their matching striking dimples (a nod to dimples symbolizing good luck), their playful banter and natural chemistry turn every shared scene into pure, feel good television.

Equally central to the story are the village elders and long-time business owners. Some notable characters include Oh Chun-jae (played by Jo Han-chul), a quirky former singer-songwriter turned owner of the cafe “Coffee by Day and Beer by Night.” Another standout is Yeo Hwa-jeong (played by Lee Bong-ryun), the humble, hardworking matriarch and owner of Hwajeong Raw Fish Restaurant, who plays a vital role in Hye-jin’s assimilation into the tight-knit community. Between its vibrant ensemble cast and the town’s authentic, lived-in charm, the series delivers the cozy comfort of a warm embrace or healing homecoming.

The Cons

While the series is a breezy, seaside romantic comedy that makes an ideal comfort watch, especially for K-drama newcomers, its slower, slice-of-life pacing might not be ideal for everyone. The narrative is simple and easy to digest, though the pace picks up significantly in the second half. As heavier drama comes into play, the show still carefully honors its feel-good, healing heart, balancing emotional weight with lighthearted charm.

Fun Fact: Visiting Gongjin!

Despite that the detailed city of Gongjin feels so authentic and real, it isn’t actually a real town in South Korea. It merely takes inspiration from coastal towns like Pohang, South korea where there are a handful of places like Cheongha Market and Sabang Memorial Park where some of the series was filmed.
