In a society obsessed with picture-perfect aesthetics, what is the cost of hiding your true self? The popular drama True Beauty grapples with this question through the journey of Lim Ju-kyung (Moon Ga-young), a high school girl who ascends from being a bullied outcast to a worshipped “goddess” at her new school through the power of makeup. Beneath its romantic comedy guise, the series poses a sharp critique of harmful and unattainable beauty standards and the fear of being perceived and truly seen.

After years of severe bullying at school for her looks, Ju-kyung uses the opportunity of her parents transferring her to master the art of makeup enhancements. After an adjustment period. Ju-kyung revels in the increased attention from her peers. However, her blossoming social life hits a snag when she runs into Lee Su-ho (Cha Eun-woo), a handsome idolized student from her new school at her favorite comic book shop whilst bare-faced.

Determined to protect her newfound status, Ju-kyung goes to extensive, even comedic lengths to prevent Su-ho from uncovering the truth. Meanwhile, the edgy, motorcycle-riding Seo-jun (Hwang In-youp) makes his return to school reigniting a longstanding feud with Su-ho. When Su-ho invetiably makes the connection that the idolized transfer student and the comic shop girl are indeed the same person, Ju-Kyung lands herself in a secret contract to secure his silence.

♡ Between the nostalgic traditional high school setting and charming lead trio, the light-hearted romantic comedy drama is the perfect comfort watch. The show had many comical and heart-warming moments with Ju-Kyung’s dysfunctional family as they adjust to her social transformation. Lim Ju-young (Kim Min-gi), Ju-kyung’s younger cheeky and mischevious brother also adds a humorous note to the family dynamics. He teases Ju-Kyung at home but underneath is fiercly portective of his family.

♡ The main trio of Ju-Kyung, Seo-jun, and Su-ho are an amusing, chaotic trio. Their tangled yet thoroughly enthralling love triangle makes the series so binge-able. Seo-jun’s embarassing dance to “Okey Dokey” by Mino and Zico became a viral meme for fans of the drama. Ultimately, the main cast’s portrayal of messy, unbridled high school romance enhances the witty and comical plot.
