Synopsis

Nevertheless is a moody, hyper-realistic dive into modern college “situationships,” art school aesthetics, and the magnetic pull of a walking red flag. The series originates from a Naver Webtoon by creator Jeonseo that was first published in 2018 under the Korean Hangul title Algoitjiman (알고있지만). The live-action adaptation of the digital saga is simultaneously frustrating and utterly compelling. Despite its exasperating romantic dynamics, the drama pinpoints the shortcomings of modern-day relationship ambiguities and self-sabotage in love.

The episodic drama focuses on the inner turmoil of sculptor Yoo Na-bi (Han So-hee), who becomes jaded and swears off love after a traumatic first relationship with an egomaniacal older partner. Fresh out of this toxic, draining relationship with a serial cheater, Na-bi (which translates to 나비, or butterfly) collides with Park Jae-eon (Song Kang), a flirtatious fellow art classmate with a butterfly tattoo who chronically avoids commitment. Despite the red flags, Na-bi finds herself pulled into an intoxicating, whirlwind friends-with-benefits arrangement.

After reconnecting with a childhood friend—the sunny, kind-hearted Yang Do-hyeok (Chae Jong-hyeop), a viral internet chef who serves as the ultimate “green flag” counterpart to Jae-eon, Na-bi finds herself at a crossroads as he pursues her. Ultimately, the question becomes clear: who will she gravitate to in the end?

What Worked (The Good)

• The Realism: Unlike dream-like, fairy-tale K-dramas, Nevertheless tackles the messier grey areas of modern dating, offering a more grounded glimpse into how red-flags operate and affect others within romantic and casual relationships.
• The Visual Metaphors: Setting the drama in a sculpture department parallels the emotional shaping and breaking of the characters. Na-bi goes through rapid transformative change in her schooling and romantic life, as her meticulous sculpturing is symbolic of her emotional state.
• Lead Performances: Han So-hee and Song Kang physically embody the original digital series characters and have an electric chemistry that translates beautifully on-screen.

What Didn’t (The Bad)

• Frustration Factor: If you do not enjoy seeing characters repeatedly make self-sabotaging choices—your patience will definitely be tested while watching this drama.
• Whiplash Plot: The narrative loops and drags a bit in the middle episodes before finding its footing in the subsequent final episodes.

Final Verdict:

Nevertheless is the kind of show you indulge in like forbidden fruit—a K-drama that is as addictive and delicious as it is frustrating and bitter. The series is toxic, mesmerizing, and entirely dependent on whether you enjoy slow-burn romantic tension delivered through an ultra-realistic, modern lens. Packed with friction and bad choices, the drama remains highly entertaining throughout and serves as a great palate cleanser during a drama slump. While the characters’ decisions might drive you crazy, you certainly won’t be able to look away from the magnetic, stunning leads, Han So-hee and Song Kang.
